PNU-LISAA: A Team Working For One Goal

Acceptance speech by Ma. Evelyn P. Nabus delivered during the 4th General Assembly on November 20, 2004 at PNU Library, Manila

Ms. Perla Garcia, our inducting officer, Dr. Linda M. Tayona, chairman, PNU LIS Department, members of the LIS Department, colleagues in the profession, good afternoon.

I am having mixed feelings right now. I feel anxious if I can carry out the responsibilities that go with the position of president the Association has entrusted me. But knowing that I belong to a team that really works and is committed to carrying out the Association’s vision, I feel relieved.

My term will continue the vision of the Association to conduct a massive campaign for membership and it will only be done with the help of each one of us. Now we have more than 200 members, but sad to say only a quarter of the members are active, and some are hesitant to commit their time, knowledge, and sometimes their “treasures” for the success of the Association.

We will also continue to conduct relevant for a and seminars with minimal fees and invite competent speakers. We are open to suggestions on topics we should carry on for next year and how we can raise funds for our Association so we can continue to support deserving LIS student through a scholarship grant.

We have all dreamed for this Association to come into being and now that we are on our fourth year, I humbly ask your help to invite your classmates to be part of our Association, A TEAM that works to achieve one goal.

Lastly, thank you for all the support you are giving the Association and we are hoping to see all of you and your other classmates in our forthcoming activities. And I know with the help of all of you present here, our Association will go a long way. Good day.

2003-2004 Accomplishment Report

Delivered by Consuelo J. Estigoy during the 4th General Assembly last November 20, 2004, PNU Library Conference Room

It’s been a year since I accepted the responsibility as president of the Association and now it is the time for me to turnover the duties to the incoming president. I proudly present the achievement of the Board for the year 2004.

ORGANIZED FORA AND WORKSHOP

At this time of economic crisis, the Board thought of reducing the activities and focus on more substantial matters. Last March 13, we held a second career talk exclusively for the LIS graduating students titled “How to Prepare for a Successful Job Application” in collaboration with the PNU Library and Information Science Department. The resource persons were the past two presidents of PNU-LISAA, Mrs. Placida Socorro Limpin-Lim of Assumption College and Ms. Elnora L. Conti of the Thomas Jefferson Information Center. We promise to continue this activity to help the graduating students of LIS in preparing to land a job. In this activity, we get our best and successful alumni to be our speakers to inspire our students and also to inform them of the existence of the alumni association.

On August 20, we held a seminar-workshop on “Leadership and Networking: A Successful Partnership Among Librarians” at the PNU Library Conference Room. We invited again Mrs. Conti to share her knowledge on this matter. It aimed to involve the librarians from different organizations and libraries, update themselves on the latest trends and share what they have in terms of skills and resources with other librarians. This activity was very successful and well attended perhaps due to the early dissemination of the invitation and to the relevance of the topic. We were surprised to note that most of our participants were non-alumni and mostly from school libraries. Our sincerest gratitude to the former DepEd NCR Director, Dr. Corazon Santiago for the endorsement of the activities thru the different school superintendents in Metro Manila.

Today is the last activity of the year titled “Alleviating Anxiety.” It aimed to give you the theory of library anxiety and how it affects library use and how to alleviate the problem by providing practical recommendations.

FINANCIAL MATTERS

When I assumed the position of president, we really thought having fundraising activities because we cannot move without the funds. With so many projects in mind and after a brainstorming session, the Board agreed to the idea of having a raffle (the draw which we did earlier) to give scholarships to deserving PNU LIS undergraduate students. Again thank you so much for your untiring support by buying the tickets.

I know you are always ready to help the Association. Maybe next school year we will start to sponsor a scholar. The incoming members of the Board are expected to come out with the criteria on how to obtain this opportunity with the help of our faculty at the Department. Ms. Medina de Castro, our second time treasurer will report the details of our financial standing later.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership has always been a problem for some reasons: distance, no contact details, etc. So I am appealing to those active members to invite your friends and batch mates to involve themselves in the Association. As I have said we are still growing and we need your support. Everyone has to contribute in our own little way for the success of the organization. And lastly, please pay your dues voluntarily or else will hunt you… just kidding. I know it’s easy to ask you especially when it comes to our Association.

PUBLICATION

We proudly published the improved newsletter this time and may we give the recognition to Miss Bless Velasco, our PRO for the new format. We had two newsletters for this year. You are welcome to contribute if you have any idea or any announcements that you want to include in the newsletter.

BOARD MEMBERS 2003-2004

When I started to serve the Association in 2002, I was hesitant at first to be a part of an organization thinking that there will always be controversies or whatever… but it’s different in PNU-LISAA. We treated each other as friends, Tita Nora was like a real Tita to all of us. Everybody has the image of a “cowboy,” even if they wore high heels they won’t mind rushing to buy needed materials or carry a bulk of photocopied materials. That’s how I know my colleagues, very cooperative, “walang pasosyal.” I will surely miss the outgoing officers but don’t worry you’re just a phone call away. I am sure the next Board will give your respective assignments as members of the different committees. May I present each one of them, our ever pre-occupied Vice President Ms. Evelyn P. Nabus of Marikina Public Library; Ms. Ofelia Irabon of NSC, Secretary; Treasurer Ms. Medina de Castro of Sta. Isabel College; Mrs. Estela P.Montejo of Ateneo de Manila University, Auditor; Ms. Blesila Velasco of the National Library, PRO; and Board of Directors Ms. Jocelyn L. Ladlad of De La Salle University; Ms. Shirley Nava of Department of Justice; Ms. Carol Magsino, ms. Mary Ann Jimenez of DLSU-Dasmarinas, Mr. Antonio Resurreccion of Xavier School and Ex-officio Ms. Placida Socorro Limpin of Assumption College.

Thank you again for giving me this opportunity to become your president. I am very optimistic that someday if someone call you to be a nominee, please don’t refuse right away. I assure you, you will learn a lot in joining associations especially being a board member. Formal education is not enough to develop your skills but it’s also important to know hot interact with your fellow professionals. My sincerest gratitude to our dear fellow alumni, our regular “sukis,” who are enthusiastic in attending our activities, also to the faculty of the PNU LIS Department headed by Dr. Linda Tayona, thank you for all the support. And to all the members, you are our inspiration to keep the Association strong. I hope you will keep on supporting the Association. And lastly my appreciation to my family, to my husband who kept on tracking me down even if he’s miles away from me just to check that I am safe in my traveling from Nueva Ecija to Manila. Well that’s another story to tell. To my boss and only daughter, because I’m a full time mother now, thank you for bearing with me in time of my absences to attend our activities and regular meetings. Also not to forget, my relatives who were willing to substitute as my “yaya,” thank you so much for those help. But this will not be the end. Expect my full support to the Association even if I will become a regular member. Hope to see more of our alumni in our activities next year. Maraming salamat po!

A Shared Vision of A Dynamic PNU-LISAA

Acceptance speech delivered by Consuelo J. Estigoy during the 3rd General Assembly on November 21, 2003 at the PNU Library, Manila

Mrs. Fe Robles our inducting officer, Dr. Linda M. Tayona, Chairman of PNU LIS Department, faculty of the Department, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.

I don’t know if I’m happy or sad. All I can feel is the exhilaration of new challenges. Thank you for permitting me to be your president.

I am honored by your faith in me and am especially honored to be following in the footsteps of our wonderful and talented past presidents. They have made the PNU-LISAA what it is today, which continues to grow and provide even greater service to the cause of our fellow alumni.

Actually, my acceptance of the responsibilities as president was made earlier; let me give you a little background on what happened. It was in the early part of July when I came back from the burial of my father, when I received the resignation letter of our president, Mr. Jing Bautista. I informed the group right away and during our regular meeting, I asked the Board if they would accept the resignation of Jing, to which they declined citing the upcoming election and there were only three months left to his term. I then sent my reply to Jing stating that the body didn’t accept his resignation, but then he made no reply and that was it. I was really devastated then because I just lost my father, then here, the president of the Association. But we had to move on. Thanks to my colleagues in the Board, they showed me their support and we continued to work as one.

My term will continue the rigid campaign for membership. Aside from collecting membership fees personally, maybe we can make our membership renewals thru bank transfers for those who cannot attend but are willing to pay their annual fees. As I’ve said earlier we are a non-profit organization so rely mostly on the membership fees we collect.

We will continuously update our directory of alumni and if possible we will provide each one a copy of this directory.

Also we will continue to conduct relevant seminars and for a with very affordable fees and competent speakers. And I’m thinking of a fundraising activity this coming year to sustain the expenses of the Association.

Another important activity will be to sponsor a scholarship grant to a deserving LIS student. And we will try to collaborate with other alumni associations and other library organizations to come up with a joint activity or project. Also, I encourage all members to visit and register in our email group @ PNULISAA@yahoogroups.com because we use this for our regular announcements and updates.

I hope you’ll bear with me in sharing my aspirations and I have a reason to believe that the best is yet to come.

I would like to take this opportunity to urge you to support our fresh and still growing Association. Each of you, in your own particular way have helped to set the stage for our continued success. According to a book I’ve read, to be effective, “A leader must be able to motivate those she leads, have a shared vision, and with the clarity of that vision, the skill to articulate it and perseverance to bring it to fruition while valuing all members of the association.”

In closing, I would like to express my thanks to my wonderful family for the support and understanding, my husband and only daughter who could not be here today but send their love and congratulations. Thank you and hope to see you all in our forthcoming activities.

2002 Accomplishment Report

Delivered by Placida Socorro L. Limpin during the 2nd General Assembly of the PNU-LISAA held at Sta. Isabel College on November 15, 2002

October last year, I took my oath as president of the Association while working as a college instructor. Today, I relinquish my position to my successor as a librarian. Two years in the Association and three jobs in between. From librarian, educator, and back to being a librarian.

I can say that it has been a very fruitful year for the Association. Last year, the Association was struggling for its dear life. This year, we have stood on solid ground.

The Officers and Board of Directors

The following were selected as officers and members of the Board: Medel Vincent Bautista – Vice-President, Ofel Irabon – Secretary, Consuelo J. Estigoy – Treasurer, Evelyn P. Nabus – Auditor, Medina de Castro – Auditor, Lorenza Dungca, Zarah Gagatiga, Erlinda Lagundi, Marilou Santos and Rowena Rueda - Board of Directors, Elnora Conti was ex-officio.

Like last year, we suffered a setback losing two officersin midstream. Since it was too late to take in replacements from last year’s nominees, the Board decided not to appoint a replacement anymore.

Accomplishments

The Association was able to come up with two for a, both were well-attended. In May, we had Thelma Japzon of the Civil Service Commission lecture on customer service. The forum was entitled “Proactive LIP’s: Committed to Customer Service.” We had no less than the PNU president, Dr.Nilo L. Rosas deliver the welcome address as he outlined his vision for the University’s library.

In August, the second forum entitled ”The Library as Venue for Literacy Development” was finally held after a series of postponements due to bad weather. The speaker for the forum was Ms. Del Hernandez from Ateneo de Manila Grade School Media Center.

We originally planned to conduct four forums for the year had not “Gloria” unleased her wrath last July. Of course, I am referring to “Gloria” the storm and not “Gloria” the president who is unleashing a storm of her own. But that is another story.

We also tied up with two independent organization for our outreach. Last January, we coordinated a round-table discussion in cooperation with the office of the Department of Education NCR Director Dr. Corazon Santiago, a fellow alumna, regarding the plight of school librarians. Mrs. Susima Gonzales was on hand to answer the concerns of public school librarians.

We also forged a partnership with the Children’s Library, a project of the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation. Seminar-workshops for public school teachers on indexing and cataloging were held in their three libraries with the Association providing the resource speakers for cataloging. Ms. Erlinda Lagundi was at Galleria, Ms. Zarah Gagatiga was at Novaliches, and Rosalina Soriano was in Imus. Mharlo Pua, the Chief Librarian of Children’s Library, has already expressed his desire to continuously work with the Association for a our mutual benefit.

I also represented the Association in the planning workshop for the forthcoming PLAI National Congress.

Fund Raising

We held a fund raising activity – a bingo social – on the afternoon of August 10, 2002, right after the forum. We were able to solicit the prizes for the winners, which contributed heftily to the Association’s back account. Please see our newsletter for the list of winners.

Financial Standing

On money matters, I am proud to report an increase in the Association’s bank account and I have to thank our treasurer, Connie, for coming up with the idea of a Bingo Social and for conceptualizing the activity.

Worth mentioning, too, was the sizeable donation of Dr. Enrique Coralejo, 2002 PNUAA president – all of ten thousand pesos – who took pity on the Association when he heard of our financial status while listening to the treasurer’s report last year. He was our inducting officer then.

I will leave the specifics with Connie, as she will be reporting on the present financial status of the Association.

Publications

We were able to publish four newsletters for the year, including this recent issue. Credit goes to Medy for her efficiency and persistence in following up articles. Allow me to mention that we do not spend anything for the reproduction of the newsletters. We use the resources of the officers, or at least those who have the resources in printing copies for distribution.

Membership

The alumni signing up for membership are increasing not by leaps and bounds but rather slowly. We started off at seventy (70) and today we number close to one hundred fifty (150). We are, however, not disheartened at all. That our number is increasing is a positive sign, but like all organizations, it is difficult to collect membership renewals. I hope the next set of officers can address this problem.

At this point in the life of the Association, I can bravely say that we have managed to carve a niche in the crowded world of professional library associations. Proof of this is the regular attendance of “sukis.” I feel that we have found a winning formula for a successful endeavor – timely, relevant, and useful topics for forums, competent and eloquent speakers, affordable registration fees, and food that fills the stomach. So who says you have to pay more to get quality service? Not here at PNU-LISAA. I hope someday, we will be known as a progressive library association.

If there is one person who is glad that my term has finally come to an end – he’s my husband. But what he doesn’t know is that I will always be here for the Association.

The shoes I will be leaving is not too big for Jing to fill in. I did not accomplish this alone. Despite the absence of two officers, I am thankful to have been given a hardworking, efficient, and dedicated officers. We have forged friendship across time and those times will be cherished.

I encourage the members of the Association to play an active role because this is a good training ground for organizational skills. Something you can’t learn from your work in one year.

To the outgoing officers, words are not enough to express my deepest gratitude. In time you shall reap what you have sown in the Association. I hope you all will become president of this Association someday.

To the incoming officers, just stick with our formula and you won’t do wrong. Jing cannot do things alone. Support him and be united just as we were united, in spirit and in ideals.

Thank you and good day.

Accomplishment Report: PNU-LISAA 2002-2003

Delivered by Consuelo J. Estigoy during the 3rd General Asembly, Nocember 21, 2003, PNU Library Conference Room

Good afternoon everyone.

On behalf of Mr. Model Bautista, the outgoing president of the Association, I am proud to present the accomplishment report for the year 2002-2003, despite some difficulties both human and limited resources, the members of the Board tried their best to serve the Association.

ORGANIZED FOR A AND WORKSHOPS

This year, the Association organized two fora and two workshops. Last February 22, 2003, we held a forum designed especially for the graduating students of our Alma Mater with the PNU LIS Department entitled “Preparing for a Successful Job Application” at the PNU LIS Library. We invited our fellow alumna, Ms. Dorothy Geronimo of the Asian Development Bank as our resource speaker.

On May 8-9, 2003, we held another interesting topic on “Promoting Literacy Through Storytelling” at the National Library as our venue. It aimed to promote library’s resources through storytelling; for teachers and librarians to share their knowledge through stories to stimulate the child’s mind. We invited experts like Prof. Minerva dela Paz, lecturer of UP College of Education, Ms. Roret Sison, librarian of International School, Manila, Dr.Luis Gatmaitan, a physician and writer, and our very own fellow alumni Ms. Zarah Gagatiga, librarian of Xavier School. Also we invited very dynamic storytellers like Ms. Melody of Alitaptap. Though we were a bit disappointed with the attendance, it was a great regret for those who missed the opportunity because the resource speakers were really competent, interesting topics and were beneficial especially for school librarians. Anyway, you better attend next time.

The third activity was a forum on “Systems Librarianship 101” held on August 29, 2003 held at the PNU Auditorium - a very relevant topic in this time of computer age. We invited a very proficient person on technology, Ms. Lourdes David, Director of Rizal Library, Ateneo de Manila University as our resource person.

And the last activity which was held today, a topic on “Proactive Communication Skills for Effective Librarians” with our fellow alumna and ex-officio Ms. Placida Socorro Limpin as resource speaker. It was intended to give you some tips on how to become a speaker and how to write an effective business letter.

The Association will sponsor a participant for the PLAI National Congress and for the fellowship as a show of support to the umbrella organization.

FINANCIAL MATTERS

Our treasurer, Medina de Castro will give you the details of our financial status later. But I’m happy to say that at least we survived despite the limited funds. Anyway, we’re not an income generating association. Some of the participants shouldered their expenses so we tried to lower our registration fees just to make it affordable especially for small libraries. We really did not generate income with the fora so we will think of a fundraising campaign in the future to sustain the needs of the Association and to generate funds for scholarship.

MEMBERSHIP

I’m happy to say that membership is increasing. Although there is a problem in collecting membership fees like in the previous years, but we will try to solve this next year. Maybe we can think other methods or procedures on how to collect our membership dues.

PUBLICATION

This year, we published two issues for the newsletter distributed to our members. We credit it to Antonio Resurreccion, our efficient PRO for producing the issues of the newsletter.

BOARD MEMBERS OF 2002-2003

The above accomplishments will not be successfully fulfilled if not for the diligent and devoted members of the Board. May I call each one of them: Estela Montejo of ADMU, Secretary; Medie de Castro of Sta.Isabel College, Treasurer; Ma. Evelyn P. Nabus of Marikina Public Library, Auditor; Mr. Antonio Resurreccion of Xavier School, PRO; Board of Directors, Gemma Cuna of Claret School, Lorenz Dungca of UPLB, Zarah Gagatiga of Xavier School, Jocelyn L. Ladlad of DLSU, Ofelia Irabon, Marilyn Zafra of Makati Science High School and Ms. Placida Socorro Limpin of Assumption College, Ex-officio.

To the outgoing officers, I want to express my sincerest appreciation for those rewarding and pleasant experiences we have shared.

To our sponsors, friends and fellow alumni, we are still hoping for your continued support.

Sana huwag nating pabayaan ang ating “Association “ dahil nasa atin ang buhay nito. Maraming salamat po!

Welcome Address of Dr. Nilo L. Rosas, PNU President

During the Lecture Forum “Proactive LIP’s: Committed to Customer Service” May 20, 2002 PNU Conference Hall

Isang mapagpalayang umaga sa inyong lahat! Sa mga taga PNU at sa mga bisita natin na galling sa iba’t-ibang mga pamantasan at “library centers” ditto sa loob at labas ng ka-Maynilaan.

Summer is regarded by most people as a time to take a respite from a busy and demanding year. However, in an academic institution like the PNU, it means a number of things. Primarily, it’s a time to accommodate teachers from different parts of the country for professional upgrading and intellectual exchange.

Some of these encounters take the whole summer duration while others last for only brief periods of time. This morning’s academic gathering takes on a different form – a lecture forum titled “Proactive LIP’s: Committed to Customer Service.” What a catchy and attractive title you have chosen for today’s venture!

I guess, for many who are alien to your circle the phrase proactive LIP’s would undoubtedly connote interesting thoughts, some of which maybe naughty or blue. But I like it because it makes people curious to know or discover when it really denotes and what you are really doing. The only adjective I know to describe LIP’s is kissable or sometimes attractive.

As president of this institution, a president for only ten (10) days, I feel elated that the University is finally pioneering in a number of professional organization because of the creativity and initiative of its faculty and graduates embarking on worthwhile endeavors. Since the PNU’s establishment a century ago, we have been known to blaze the trail on countless laudable initiatives. What the you, PNU-LISAA, are undertaking now is considered to be a concrete example of being proactive rather than reactive. Getting involved, being forward looking, collaborating, networking, these are all proactive commitment to service.

I commend the PNU-LISAA, first for organizing yourselves into a professional group that will provide leadership in the development, promotion and the improvement of library and information service. Secondly, for sponsoring this first of a series of four lecture for a specifically programmed for the year 2002-2003. I would also liketo commend the Department of Library Science for all this continuing short term programs aimed at enhancing the personal and professional development of librarians.

The great significance that your group gives to this cause will benefit a wide array of customers from students, to writers, to researchers, to book lovers and curious individuals who have no intentions but to see how a library looks like and what it can provide. The library is the lifeblood of academic life. Even in the meager volumes of our collection, limited staff and absence of the state of the art facilities, the PNU strives to be of service to its many users and clientele. I met Prof. Marasigan few days ago and went around to see our resources and discovered, there leaves so much to be desired. I do hope in a few years time, when you come back, our library would be a little different from what you see today

Hopefully, I like to bring my colleagues and staff to the topnotch libraries in and out of Metro Manila for benchmarking purposes. I hope I can bring them to SEAMEO-INOTEC, ADB, UST, De La Salle, Ateneo De Manila University and other topnotch universities using high technology in providing library and information services to our clients.

We pride ourselves by claiming that we are the prime national teacher education university and yet we may not provide state of the art resources in library services. I am enjoining the professors, headed by Dr. Linda M. Tayona to combine their expertise with the librarians of the University so that there can be a symbolic relationship between the two groups of academicians.

On behalf of the PNU,PNU-LISAA and my own, I convey to each one of you a very warm and pleasant welcome most specially, to our guest speaker, Mrs. Thelma Japzon of the Civil Service Commission.

Hangad kop o ang tagumpay ng PNU-LISAA at ninyong mga “librarians.” Sa inyo pong lahat magandang umaga po at mainit na pagtanggap ang pinaaabot ko sa inyo.

As Good As You Want Us To Be

Inaugural Address of Placida Socorro “Peachy Limpin, 2002 President

I was a bit sad and disappointed with the attendance, since yesterday and especially today. But I take this as a challenge not only for me as the incoming president but also for the incoming board of directors to work harder, not that we did not work hard for this conference, since we planned for conference way back in July.

My sadness was turned to joy with the generous donation of Dr. Enrique Coralejo. As you can see on our financial report, we hardly have any funds left. Most of the time, we had to pick from our own pockets to fund some of the activities of the Association. Our letterheads and newsletters and anything that needed to be printed were printed using the resources of our offices. Be that as it may, we have struggled in our fiscal year.

What you have witnessed earlier – placing the medallion around my neck – was reminiscent of my graduation. Only this time the medal is way, way, way bigger than what I got when I graduated cum laude.

I can still vividly remember my freshman years while sitting in Social Orientation class, when I vowed to myself I will graduate with honors. This I am proud to say, I achieved. Not a small feat for me then, an aimless teenager. When I started working, I got envious of my colleagues who were active members of their own Library Science alumni associations. So I asked myself, “Bakit ang PNU wala? Bakit nga ba?”

This is all a dream come true, not only for me, but also for the faculty members of the PNU Library Science Department. An alumni association we can truly call our very own.

Our initial foray into the realm of organizing an association was tough to say the least. It was then I realized that it takes a lot, and I mean a lot to run an association. God has been very good to all of us in the Board. Now I truly believe that he grants us our wishes not when we want them granted but in His own time.

I would like to thank Ms. Shirley Nava for nominating me last year, though I had no idead then that I’d be the next president.

I cannot forget, and I’m also sad that she was not able to make it today to receive her Honorary Member Award, our lesson in Library Science 6 under Prof. Elinore H. De Castro. Our lesson then on library management was “A good leader is a good servant.”

So let us, your 2002 Board, serve you in the best way we can. A Board of Directors does not an association make. You, the members, are an integral part of the Association and we can be as good as you want us to be. Let us be of service to you. Let us know what you want and how we can be of help.

In its infancy, the Association has struggled and withstood the birthpains. I enjoin all of you to be one with us as we bring this Association on its own two feet.

Your officers cannot do this alone. We will continue with the brand of service we have provided in the past year. Trust in our officers that we only have the best of intentions for you.

Please continue supporting our activities. One of our projects, which is included in the action plan, is to give scholarships to students to encourage them to major in Library Science and to give research grants to masteral students.

We can only realize these with your wholehearted support. In our earlier forum where members were encouraged to sign up for committees they want to join, please expect a call from us anytime soon.

As we say in customer relation, “It’s nice to be of service.”
