To all our distinguished guests, mentors, colleagues, friends and loved ones. Good afternoon!

I have never thought nor dreamed that I would be the next president of a caring group Philippine Normal University –Library and Information Science Alumni Assn. (PNULISAA, Inc)--- It seems that I don’t have a choice than to accept this responsibility.. Neither do I have to leave because being a member in this group is really something!—the sincerity, the friendship and camaraderie of the group, and the professionalism in mind and in heart makes you feel a family member. I have come to realized that the branded “a caring group” is a reality. Thank you to our ex-officio and excellent speaker, Mr. Roderick B. Ramos for branding our association.

For our decade’s theme “love and commitment to share and to serve” will always be in our heart because we all know that an alumni of PNU will always be a loving and a caring individual just like our ex-officios namely Elnora Conti, Placida Socorro Limpin, Medina de Castro, Consuelo Estigoy, Medel Vincent Bautista, Estela Montejo, Roderick Ramos and of course Jocelyn Ladlad who have worked hard for the success of our association. All of them have in common, a big heart to share and to serve. (Hope to have a bigger one.) Without these people, our association won’t be in realization and of service. ”Kudos” to all of you!

To our dear mentors and founders namely Mr. Ruben Marasigan, Mr.Miguel Cobaria, Dr.Linda Tayona, Dr. Maria Orendain, thank you for your profound support.

To my batchmates’87… You are my treasures, I may not have the best career in my life, but I am happy having you gems grow in my heart.
To my family, my one and only love, who is very supportive and patient in all my activities in life,

And to my batch officers, let’s work hand in hand and if others were able to made it,” kaya rin natin ito!” Last but not the least to Almighty God, for the strength and guidance .

We will be celebrating our decade’s commitment and service next year, part of the plans would be the decade book consisting of directory of membership, its activities, accomplishments and achievements; (please update your membership, keep in touch by emails, through our site -PNULISAA yahoogroups); for membership activation-provision of ID is going on starting 2010 and to continuously update the members, we will select a Batch Leaders to follow up ; prescribed forum and seminar-workshops for professional development with CPE points will continue ; teamwork with the PNU-LIS Department aimed to have a better PNU enrolment and career in librarianship; continue the solicitations, raffles for scholarship grants; we will go on with the outreach program and may I request and encourage each and everyone of you to support our association though we are small, we believe that we always care.

We salute to all of you who are here, see you all next year for our decade celebration and wishing for the best cooperation and camaraderie among our members. God bless us all and Merry Christmas…

Handling... & PNU-LISAA, Inc.

More than 60 attended the forum "Handling Difficult Library Customers” last December 5 @ the Philippine Normal University-Library Conference Room sponsored by PNU-LISAA, Inc., A Caring Alumnin Group. Mr. Roderick B. Ramos, 2008 President, presented two ppt. presentations that included How to Be Gentle Librarians using powerful 7-day mantras. Spotted listening to the short lecture PNU professors Ruben P. Marasigan (2009 adviser), former advisers Miguel M. Cobaria and Maria A. Orendain.

The forum was followed by the Association's 9th general assembly with the leadership of 2009 President, Ms. Jocelyn L. Ladlad (DLSU). Newly elected officers were inducted into office by Dr. Maria A. Orendain, former adviser and current university librarian of the Philippine Normal University. They are Balinbin, Gabriel-Don Bosco Technical Institute, Makati; Cabantog, Noemi B.-St. Paul College, Pasig; Daiz, Philip Mark D.-Laguna BelAir School; Dalicano, Jocelyn-St. Michael's College, Laguna; Morales, Arturo O., III-DILG Local Government Academy, Pasig; Navarro, Marifi-Elizabeth Seton School, Las Pinas; Paya, Marybel-Caasi College of Allied Medical Professions, UP-Manila; San Pedro Chona-The National Library, Manila; Tatel, Maricel-Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Calamba with Jocelyn L. Ladlad (De La Salle University-Manila) and Marites K. Chavez (Congressional National High School-Cavite) as 2010 ex-officio and president, respectively. Rosalina Soriano (Earist-Cavite) will serve as the Association's secretary while Arturo O. Morales III(DILG Local Government Academy) is now its conference chair and vice-president.

This year's raffle winners are Ma. Lulu Salvador (P5,000.00); Wilma Olohan (P1,000.00); Kryzara Enriquez (P1,000.00); Medina De Castro whose cash prize of P1,000.00 and Lulu Salavador (1,000.00) were donated to the scholarship fund of PNU-LISAA, Inc.; George Garcia (P500.00); Angie Layugan (P500.00); May Dolis (P500.00); Dr. Ilem (P500.00); Victor Callao (P500.00).

Participants were given 2(indiv/institution al) free Why Worry, a self-help book to all; free Feminine Voices to 1st 30; free Web-Based Reader Services seminar cds to first 25 participants, LGA materials and a certificate of attendance.

2007-2008 Accomplishment Report

PNU-LISAA, Inc. is a very young association. It is only an eight-year old group of PNU LIS alumni members.

It also tries to be one caring alumni group to help provide both alumni and non-alumni an exceptional line up of professional activities which can deliver authentic learning to all – library & office personnel, faculty and LIS students, and alumni members as well.

Good Afternoon.

This year has to end and please agree with me that PNU-LISAA, Inc. is ending 2008 with winning streaks as an alumni organization.

In behalf of the PNULISAA Executive Board, I proudly present to you the following accomplishments for the year 2007-2008.

SCHOLARSHIP GRANT

Our first scholar (also last year’s scholar), Ms. Johanna Jayne S. Tacus, won first place with her classmate-team mate Donna Lyn G. Labangon in the recently concluded 17th LIS Wizard competition held last November 24, 2008 at the National Library with opponents from UST as 2nd placer, UP as 3rd placer and other contestants from AUP, BSU, BU, PUP, and UE. This year, the Association submitted an amount of four thousand (P4,000.00) pesos to the Cashier’s Office of the Philippine Normal University intendedly for Tacus through the generosities of the this year’s pillars of the Association’s scholarship namely Cayaban, Celedonia R. (DLSU, CSB), Ladlad, Jocelyn (DLSU); and Nera, Corazon (PRC). Tacus served and did secretarial work and assisted in some occasions of the Association.

Your annual care means a lot to our LIS scholar Ann!

Ann is 3rd year 17 year-old LIS student this year. She said that she’s thankful that she can study and truly grateful for this scholarship. “With your help, I will finish college and in turn, help my family too. I promised myself that I will do my best. ”

PRC BFL Corazon Nera said in her letter:

“I believe in the Association’s noble objectives in realizing my dream to elevate the status and image of the profession by recruiting the best potential librarians imbued with good work values and high ethical standards.”

MEMBERSHIP/ ALUMNI DIRECTORY

There are more than 1,402 documented alumni names in the roster of PNU LS alumni in one blog (http://librarysciencealumniofpnu.blogspot.com) I keep. It is a partial/unofficial list of Library Science graduates of the Philippine Normal University taken from the souvenir "Library Science Golden Jubilee (1957-2008)" of the Department of Library and Information Science of PNU with the theme: THE PNU LS PROGRAM THROUGH THE YEARS under the leadership of Dr. Linda M. Tayona with Dr. Maria A. Orendain, University Librarian.

Last year, Montejo, 2007 president reported a total of 178 alumni in the general membership, active or not, while this year, 2007 Executive Board made only a handful of less than a hundred (17) plus it’s during this year that the Association started to collect 150 pesos for membership fee.

NEWSLETTER

We have two issues of the PNU-LISAA Newsletter. The first one featured "Library Science Golden Jubilee (1957-2008)" of the Department of Library and Information Science of PNU with the theme: THE PNU LS PROGRAM THROUGH THE YEARS.
Elnora Conti was outstanding librarian as the Department’s choice while Mrs. Zarah Grace C. Gagatiga, a pride of her batch in 1994 (Xavier School library chair) served as the celebration’s speaker. The Association financially assisted the Department. (food & speaker’s stipend)

This has reminded us about the career talk at DLSU with 2008 BLIS graduating class of the Philippine Normal University, consisting of 3 male and 9 female students. They attended a roundtable career talk at the DLSU EDRC Multi-Purpose Hall with Library Director Ana Fresnido as lecturer on February 29, 2008.

Fresnido explained and showed her expertise as an alumnus and a practicing librarian through an informative Powerpoint presentation and for this she received a certificate of recognition for her support to PNU-LISAA, Inc. in its mission of assisting Library Science graduating students in shaping their career paths in librarianship by serving as lecturer to the Association’s Career Talk program-activity.

In another occasion, Ladlad and I, your president, attended PLAI meetings at the National Library (March 4 & September 17). The alignment of seminars, workshops, etc. of each association was the main objective of the meeting and Library and Information Services Month. PNU-LISAA, Inc, also, enjoined to give an amount of P2,000.00 as donation to the Philippine Librarians Association or PLAI approved by its Board of Trustees during its second meeting on March 8 as its official response to PLAI’s Resolution No.9, Series of 2007. Other library organizations like ASLP, MAHLAP, PAARL, PATLS, etc, were also represented.

PNU LIS Prof. Ruben P. Marasigan and Librarian IV Evelyn P. Nabus of Pamantasan ng Marikina officially accepted their roles as advisers to 2008 officers of PNU-LISSA, Inc. Nabus is the Association’s 5th president and former officer to public librarians’ association while Marasigan is former chief librarian of the Philippine Normal University. Both of them are first years’ incorporators of PNU-LISAA, Inc way back in 2001.

Both Eileen D. Magadia of DLSU-Lipa and Flordeliz Siochi of NCCA resigned from their positions as board member and secretary, respectively, due to health reasons. Elsa Guarino of Lyceum-Batangas was considered for the former’s position but declined for the same reason and was replaced by Jocelyn Haling of St. Michael’s College-Laguna while Elvira Reyes of St. Paul College-Paranaque replaced Siochi beginning June 1.

Library Tour and Forum

PLAI and TJIC Director Ryza Alenzuela opened their doors to PNU-LISAA, Inc. PNU-LISAA, Inc. acknowledges generosity of both The PLAI Office and TJIC Director Ryza Alenzuela in accommodating its participants to the forum: Handling Donations and Exploring Web Sites last May 13, 2008. Forum participants were given more than 15-page handout of free online resources consolidated by Mrs. Consuelo J. Estigoy (Chief Librarian of Eduardo L. Jose Memorial College) and were encouraged by TJIC staff and Ms. Jocelyn Ladlad of ASRC-DLSU to set up their own American Corner or begin with an American Shelf for countless online information sources through their lectures. TJIC Director Alenzuela iterated her support to both libraries and librarians and also advised the participants to write the Thomas Jefferson Information Center or TJIC to serve them well.

Seminar-workshop

Fifty-eight (58) seminar-workshop attendees crowded the conference room of the Edilberto P. Dagot Hall – library building of the Philippine Normal University for “Library & Information Literacy Power Packages� of the PNU-LISAA, Inc. – a caring alumni group and were wowed by authentic speakers last September 10-11, 2008.

Two (2) LIS students registered – Nelah Miado from the University of the Philippines and Johanna Jayne Tacus from the Philippine Normal University.  Tacus is the Association’s scholar and president to one PNU LIS undergraduate society.
40% or 23 LIS alumni of PNU with three LIS faculty namely University Librarian Dr. Maria A. Orendain, Prof. Ruben P. Marasigan and Prof. Miguel M. Cobaria were in attendance.

The planning we made in Dona Jovita Resort in Laguna in May and the teamwork we have had resulted to a more fruitful year for the Association. Kindly congratulate each one of us and extend a hand to everyone as your way of appreciating what we would like to fulfill as a caring alumni group and that is, long life to the Association and good health to every member, paid or not paid!

READER SERVICES

Greetings from the Association!

The PNU-LISAA, Inc., A caring alumni group, invites your librarians and other information professionals to a 2-day seminar-workshop “LIBRARY PLUS on WEB-BASED READER SERVICES” on July 2-3,2009 at the Function Hall of St. Joseph Resthouse Sagada , Mountain Province.

Through this seminar-workshop, the Association aims to share and enrich the knowledge of fellow professionals and library personnel on literacy with library plus on web-based reader services through authentic learning by: (1) introducing web-based reader services as a LIBRARY PLUS tool in the discovery for the best practices enriching customer’s library experience; (2) applying professional assessment over online activities as bases for upgrading librarian’s job description and (3) creating relevant library web-based marketing techniques to sell reader services.

Seminar topics are: Reader services across all library types; online/ web-based reader services; upgrading reader services librarians’ job description and work nature; and online multilevel marketing /networking of reader services with speakers namely: Ms. Corazon M. Nera (Board for Librarians Chair/ Professor/Librarian), Ms. Lourdes T. David (Library Director, Ateneo de Manila University) Ms. Marian S. Ramos (UP-Diliman, College Librarian) and Ms. Elvira B. Lapuz (2009 PAARL President/Lecturer/UP-Diliman College Librarian).

CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS

Article I
NAME, DOMICLE AND COLOR

Section 1. The name of this organization shall be Philippine Normal University Library and Information Science Alumni Association, informally known as PNU-LISAA, herein referred to as the Association.
Section 2. The domicile and office of the PNU-LISAA shall be housed at the Library Science, Reading & Literacy Department at the PNU Library Building, Taft Ave., Manila
Section 3. The seal of the Association shall be two concentric circles. In the middle of the inner circle are two clasped hands symbolizing the alumni and the university. Behind the clasped hands are an open book and a lighted torch in yellow representing education and library science. The background is blue with the ideals of the association, namely, truth, freedom, literacy and fellowship. In the outer circle, the PNU-LISAA is Spelled out and the founding year of the Association.
Section 4. The color of the association shall be blue and yellow.

Article II
OBJECTIVES

Section 1. The objectives of this Association shall be:
a.to establish friendship and enhance social fellowship among its members;
b.to promote understanding, cordiality and cooperation among its members;
c.to advance networking and communication pathways among its members;
d.and, to support the programs and activities of the Library Science Department;
Section 2. The Association shall:
a.promote and support a continuing program for library education;
b.and, uphold the dignity and the professional ethics of librarianship.

Article III
MEMBERSHIP AND DUES

Section 1. Membership in the Association is open to all graduates and faculty of the Library Science Department of the Philippines Normal University – undergraduate specialization, undergraduate majors, and graduate programs in library science. Membership shall consist of:
a.regular members who shall pay an annual due of P100.00;
b.Honorary members who shall be persons who have distinguished themselves in the field of librarianship and contributed to the mission and vision of the Association upon nomination of the Board. They shall be exempt from paying dues.
Section 2. All of the above shall become members in good standing on payment dues pursuant to article VII section 1.
Section 3. all members of the Association in good standing shall have the right to attend general meetings, to participate in discussions, to propose resolutions and amendments to the constitution and by-laws, to be nominated for any position, and to vote.
Section 4. A member who fails to pay his annual dues for two (2) consecutive years shall be deemed a member not of good standing.

Article IV
BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Section 1. The Association shall be governed by a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors shall consist of five (5) elected officers, five (5) directors and the immediate past-president as ex-officio. Only those elected to the board of directors may vote to the meetings of the Board.
Section 2. Elective officers shall be the president, Vice-President, Treasurer, Auditor, and Public Relations Officers (PRO). The Secretary of the Board of Directors shall be appointed by the President pursuant to Article V section 1(b). Terms of office of these officers shall be for one year.
Section 3. Chairpersons of the following Standing Committees shall be members of the Board of Directors and appointed by the President, subject to approval by the Board: Membership Committee; Nominating and Election Committee; Conference & Programs Committee; Finance Committee; Documentation and Publications Committee; Sunshine Committee; etc. The President may appoint, subject to the approval by the Board of Directors, Chairpersons for other committees not specifically listed here. Individual members of these committees shall be the discretion of the chairperson of each committee. All committees shall report to the Board of Directors.
Section 4. In the event that vacancy occurs in the Board, The candidate garnering the next highest number of votes in the last annual election shall serve the remaining portion of the term.

Article V
OFFICERS

Section 1. It shall be the duty of the President to:
a.Preside all the bard meetings of the Association.
b.Appoint the secretary and Chairperson of each committee subject to the approval of the Board of Directors.
c.Attend to or designate all Association correspondence and furnish the secretary with copies.
d.Have the right to be a signatory on the Association’s Bank account and disburse finances together with the Treasurer.
e.Submit an accomplishment report at the end of the term.
f.Serve as ex-officio member of the Board of Directors upon expiration of his term but shall not have the right to vote.
Section 2. It shall be the duty of the Vice-President to:
a.In the absence of the President, perform all the duties of the President described in Article V section 1 (a-f) except section d.
b.Succeed the President in case of vacancy for the remainder of the unexpired term.
c.Perform such other functions and duties that may be assigned to him by the president and/or the Board.
d.Chair the Conference and Programs Committee.
Section 3. It shall be the duty of the Secretary to:
a.Be appointed by the President.
b.Take and distribute the minutes of the proceedings of all Board of Directors meetings, and prepare agenda and resolutions.
c.File all papers, correspondence, and documents for future reference.
d.Notify by phone, fax or e-mail members of the Board of Directors about meetings.
e.Keep a record of all the members of all committees
f.Perform such other functions and duties that may be assigned to him by the President, the Board and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Section 4. It shall be the duty of the Treasurer to:
a.Be the financial officer of the Association
b.Maintain an accurate and current account of all income and expenses of the Association, and to report this financial status at each meeting of the Board of Directors.
c.Serve as Chairperson of the Finance Committee.
Section 5. It shall be the duty of the Auditor to:
a.Audit and examine the receipt of all finances and disbursements of funds of the Association, and shall see to it that the disbursements are properly carried out in accordance with these by-laws, the resolutions of the Board of Directors and the Members of the Association.
b.Make an annual report to the Board of Directors and to the members of the Association and such other reports that the Board of Directors may require him.
Section 6. It shall be the duty of the Public Relations Officer (PRO) to:
a.Be Chairperson of the Documentation and Publications Committee to cover all the activities of the Association.
b.Prepare press releases of all the Association’s activities.
c.Keep a Scrapbook of the events and activities of the Association like photos, newspaper articles and other materials.
d.Be in charge of disseminating information to all members of the Association.
Section 7. In case of resignation, removal, or permanent incapacity of both President and the Vice-President, the Board shall elect among the five (5) other members who are not holding any position, an acting President who shall serve the remainder of the term.

Article VI
COMMITTEES

Section 1. It shall be the duty of the Membership Committee chairperson to:
a.Keep accurate records of membership files.
b.Maintain accurate records of dues paid and issue notices of dues payable in coordination with the Treasurer.
c.Receive, account for, and turn over to the
Treasurer, all funds received in payment for dues.
d.Maintain mailing lists of members of the Association.
e.Encourage eligible alumni to become members of the Association.
f.Appoint three members of the committee from the genera membership.
Section 2. It shall be the duty of the Nominating and Elections Committee chairperson to:
a.Appoint three members from the general membership
b.Work with the Membership Committee chairperson and determine who among the regular members may be able to serve actively for the Association and contact potential active members.
c.Preside over all nominating meetings.
d.Furnish ballots, supervise voting and ballot count and proclaim the winners.
Section 3. it shall be the duty of the Conference and Programs chairperson to:
a.Plan and arrange for the Alumni Reunion, Annual Membership Meeting, and other events planned by the Board of Directors.
b.Appoint four members from the general membership to oversee the program, decorations, plan for and manage reservations and registration of guests.
Section 4. It shall be the duty of the Documentation and Publications Committee to:
a.Take charge of the official publication of the Association
b.Appoint four members from the general membership.
Section 5. It shall be the duty of the Sunshine Committee to:
a.send birthdays, congratulatory and other important message to members.

Article VIII
NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS

Section 1. Elections shall be held every October under the supervision of the Nominations and Election Committee pursuant to Article VI section 2.
Section 2. Not later than three months before the annual meeting of the Association, the Nominations and Election Committee shall submit to the Board of directors the names of at least 15 members of good standing as its nominees for membership in the incoming Board of Directors.
The final list of nominees as approved by the Board shall be printed in sufficient number of copies by the Committee which shall subsequently mail to members of the Association each an official ballot, a copy of the list of candidate, and a brief bio-data of each candidate.
The Committee, in its accompanying letter to the members, shall instruct them to choose nine (9) from listed candidates and write their names on the ballot. The Committee shall provide the prospective voters with self-addressed stamped envelopes.
The Committee shall serve as a Board of Canvassers to canvass the votes at least three weeks before the annual meeting of the Association. The Chairman of the Board of Canvassers shall duly notify the nine (9) candidates who garnered the nine (9) highest number of votes as having been elected to the incoming Board of Directors.
Fifteen (15) days before the general homecoming and annual general assembly of the Association, the newly elected members of the Board of Directors shall meet to elect from among themselves the Vice-President and president-elect, the Treasurer, The Auditor, and the Press Relations Officer. The other five shall serve as regular members of the Board of Directors. The election of the officers shall be presided over by the incumbent president.

Article IX
MEETINGS

Section 1. Meetings of the Board of Directors shall be held monthly, the time, the date, and the place to be decided the Board itself.
a.If necessary, the President and/or a majority of the Board of Directors (6 members) can call for additional meetings as needs arise.
b.At all meetings of the Board of Directors, Six (6) members present shall constitute a quorum.
c.An officer who fails to attend 2 consecutive meetings will be given a reminder and will have to explain why he failed to attend.
Section 2. The Association shall hold an annual meeting on a date prior to the National Library and Information month, the precise date and place to be fixed by the Board. The meeting shall feature the induction into office of the incoming officers and the new members of the Association.
Section 3. Following the elections, a meeting of the out-going and incoming Board of Directors shall be called to turn over reports, books and records.
Section 4. All meetings shall be conducted according to the Robert’s Rules of Order.

Article X
AMENDMENTS

Section 1. This Constitution may be amended by 2/3 votes of the entire voting membership.
Section 2. Amendments may be proposed by the Board of Directors, or by at least twenty (20) voting members of the Association. Proposals originating from the Board of Directors Shall be approved by 2/3 vote of the Board before submission to the members. Proposals originating by petition shall be submitted in writing to the Board of Directors and shall be presented to the members with recommendations of the Board.

Article XI
ADOPTION

Section 1. This constitution and by-laws will be adopted and ratified by a majority vote of members present in the affirmative on 21 October 2000.

Good People from TJIC and ECLC for a Lakbay Library Group of PNU-LISAA, Inc.

2009 Board of PNU-LISAA, Inc, through the leadership of Ms. Jocelyn L. Ladlad (President), arranged the tour in coordination with good people from the Economic and Financial Learning Center of BSP namely its very accommodating library center manager Mrs. Cora Garcia and her friendly and attractive staff while TJIC boasts of energetic personnel and able speakers headed by its director Reysa Alenzuela. Both information centers celebrate their anniversaries and are best examples of information commons in the country. The former offers a one-stop shop experience with exhibits, audio-visual pres, touch screen interactive learning materials. There are also info and games kiosks and a very spacious library interiors accented by a lovely stairs to walk on just before the building’s second floor. The Lakbay Laybrari group was fascinated and came to be the first to see what you haven’t seen and a must see for all. Never forget to visit also BSP’s very interesting money museum, if you intend to go now.

On the other hand, American ways were demonstrated by TJIC’s Counselor for Public Affairs, Richard W. Nelson, and the eloquent Mr. John Mcguirre. With arms wide open, staff of TJIC elaborated on the power of information sources the Embassy center for reading and research sends and has. Their electronic visions have paid off and many have taken advantage of their Windows of America as essayed by known information specialists namely Brinerdine G. Alejandrino and Jocelyn Ladlad. Their Windows have both quality and advanced online and print databases and are bridges for outreach services in the form of TJIC Alert Service, subject bibliographies, lectures and training, digital video conferencing, etc. Furthermore, Nelson and Mcguirre do not only have beautiful minds for Filipinos but also authentic promises to assist and back us up all. Call up your friends now @ TJIC and help them serve you well beyond 10 years of true colors and calling.

Specifically, forty six (46) library personnel were toured around the ECLC of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and TJIC of the US Embassy. University of Batangas sent the most number of participants with 7 including one from St. Patrick’s Hospital Medical Center. Next were La Consolacion College-Manila and St. Paul College-Pasig – each with five (5) from their libraries. Don Bosco Technical Institute-Makati and Elizabeth Seton School-Paranaque had four (4). Three schools sent at least two (2) namely, Mother of Divine Providence School, St. Michael’s College-Laguna and College of Science Library-UP Diliman.

Others came from Colegio de Sta. Rosa-Makati, Congressional High School-Cavite, Cultural Center of the Philippines, De La Salle University-Manila, Eduardo L. Joson Memorial College-Nueva Viscaya, General Alvarez School of Arts & Trade-Cavite, Laguna BelAir School, Lopez Memorial Museum Library, National Archives of the Philippines, National Security Control, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, PAREF Woodrose School, Inc., Philippine Normal University, Southern Philippines Institute of Science & Technology-Cavite, and Trinity University of Asia. 22% of the attendees were officers of the sponsoring Association (PNU-LISAA, Inc.)

Next projects of the Association are Project Agoo – an outreach program in May – and a seminar-workshop on “Library Plus on Web-based/Online Reader Services” on July 2-3 in the highlands and cave lands of Sagada, Mountain Province at St. Joseph’s Resthouse.

Prexy Ladlad Leads Project/Outreach Santol in La Union

Employees from local government units and the DepEd of the Santol Municipality attended Project/Outreach Santol of PNU-LISAA, Inc, a caring alumni group, last January 31, 2009 (Saturday) at Santol Pavillion, Santol, La Union (Region I).

It was reported by Principal-II, Diosdado F. Camat, that the seminar on library management was very informative and useful especially in institutions like DepEd with small libraries, also in government units which have plans to put up libraries for the benefit of their constituents.

Also, he said that as beginners, the topics presented were very much helpful in organizing and in making their libraries functional and accessible to pupils. They learned the basic know-how on library management. Though, topics were somewhat complicated because they were new, Mr. Camat said that the group had an excellent set of speakers led by Ms. Jocelyn L. Ladlad (Association’s current president) and recommended and looks forward to a follow-up training in the days to come.

Other resource persons were former presidents namely Mrs. Estela P. Montejo (ADMU) and Mrs. Evelyn P. Nabus (PLM) while ex-officio Mr. Roderick B. Ramos (PNU), auditor Mr. Arturo Morales III (LGA DILG), board members Ms. Ofel Irabon (NSC) and Marifi E. Navarro (ESS) completed the group. EDRC-DLSU, LGA DILG and TJIC provided book donations.

The very visible and accommodating Municipal Mayor Daisy Sayangda Olivar expressed her appreciation and recognized the Association’s efforts in partnering with the Municipality in the conduct of Library Management Training held on January 31, 2009 at Santol Pavillion, Santol, La Union.

PNU-LISAA Calls for Your Support

Professional librarians of PNU-LISAA, Inc will leave for La Union for its OUTREACH SANTOL on January 31 (Saturday). Santol Municipality is headed by its Honorable Mayor Daisy Olivar and assisting her for this project is her provincial librarian named Marissa Acosta (former DLSU library staff member).. The Association' s current president Ms. Jocelyn L. Ladlad facilitates and a team will offer professional assistance through lectures and workshop to 25-30 persons manning the different libraries in the municipality with some teachers attending. This activity is aimed at (1) providing basic information on: library management and service, sourcing and handling of donations, cataloging library materials; (2) acknowledging the importance of the work of people in far flung area through the different interactive activities; and (3) sharing some books and library materials to augment the library collection.

Recipients: Around 25-30 persons manning the different libraries in the municipality and some teachers

Background:
Mayor Daisy Olivar and Marissa Acosta came to visit DLSU-Manila in November 2008 to pick-up some library donations. M. Acosta, who used to work in DLSU Library, introduced J. Ladlad to the very young mayor, Mayor Daisy. In the brief conversation, there was inter-change of some municipal concerns and dreams for the welfare of her constituents while the librarian’s work and activities were also shared to her. Mayor Daisy wishfully thought of offering her teacher and librarian constituents a lecture or similar activities that would hopefully inspire them in their work. J. Ladlad offered assistance through lectures and workshop together with her group of librarians as an outreach activity in her town of Santol. Mayor Daisy gratefully accepted the offer.

J. Ladlad discussed the information during the PNULISAA Board meeting and recommended to the Board to have this as an outreach project which was whole heartedly accepted by the Board members.

Objectives:The objectives of the out reach activity are:
1. Providing basic information on
1.1 library management and service
1.2 sourcing and handling of donations
1.3 cataloging library materials
2. Acknowledging the importance of the work of people in far flung area through the different interactive activities
3. Sharing some books and library materials to augment the library collection

Activities: Lecture-workshop, Donation of books and other materials
A. A lecture-workshop will be held in the venue provided by Mayor Daisy Olivar and Ms. Marissa Acosta

The whole day activity has three (3) lecture-workshop with the following topics:
1st Lecture-workshop on Library Management and service –J. Ladlad
2nd Lecture-workshop on Sourcing and handling of donations—N. Nabus
3rd Lecture-workshop on Cataloguing –E. Montejo

All the lectures are expected to have one or two activities for the workshop. In between lecture, ice-breaker activities will be given.

This directory will consist of medical and health libraries and librarians in the Philippines and will showcase the historical background, activities and events of MAHLAP since its establishment twenty years ago.

In this regard, we are asking for a message coming from your office to be included in the 2009 directory. This will serve as our inspiration as we continue to uplift the medical and health librarianship as a profession in our country. Kindly include a passport-sized colored photo in your reply.

President’s Report 2004-2005

It has been a year since I accepted the responsibility as president of this Association and now the time has come for me to turn-over the duties and responsibilities to the incoming president. But before that, allow me to present the achievements of the board for the year 2005.

Organized fora and workshop

As part of the yearly activity of the Association, last February, we held the 3rd annual career planning workshop for all graduating students of LIS, in coordination with the Department. It aimed to help the graduating class prepare for their job hunt. The activity included how to prepare an application letter and resume and how to prepare for an interview. The resource person was no less than our very own, the energetic Ms. Jocelyn L. Ladlad of De La Salle University.

On August 17, we held a lecture-workshop on “Cataloging in a Networked Environment” at the PNU library multimedia center. We invited, as our resource speaker, to share her expertise in cataloging, also our very own, Ms. Estela Montejo with the help of her colleague Ms. Michelle Panti of Ateneo De Manila University. The activity aimed to make cataloging easy with the help of available web resources.

Thirty-six librarians, both public and private schools attended the half-day lecture-workshop. We extend our gratitude for the sponsors on that day, the Manila Bulletin for the laptop used by the speakers and Gakken Philippines for the wireless LCD projector.

Financial Matters

Some of our past and present officers pledged certain amount of money to our coffer for the scholarship, and we are still waiting for the other alumni who may want to share their blessings also. We are still in the process of preparing documents and selection criteria for the scholarship program.

Membership

We are now in our 5th year of existence, but membership is still a problem with us, as to how we can reach out to alumni. We worked hard to establish this Association, so we are asking your help, active members to invite your classmates to be part of the Association. This is ours: share your expertise, time and sometimes your resources for the benefit of the Association.

We extend our gratitude to Lorenz and Ofel for emailing some names of their classmates and we are expecting more emails of alumni from you active members.

We published at least 2 newsletters a year. We are encouraging you members to contribute articles, announcements or ideas that you want to include in the newsletter. We also have one web site which we share with the Department at http://pnulibraryinfoscience.blogspot.com. The site’s name is PNU-LIS Updates and is maintained by a core group of alumni.

Board Members 2004-2005

As one of the pioneer in this Association, I’m proud to say that the Association survived for 5 years now and that is because all of you who supported our activities. I take great pride in being part of a team that always works as one, walang pataasan, and everyone is welcomed to contribute his ideas during brainstorming. It is indeed a commitment to all of us to work for the benefit of our Association. I will miss the group, especially the laughter during our meeting. May I present each one of them, our very energetic vice president, Ms.Medina de Castro of Sta. Isabel College; Ms. Myrna Fortus of Araullo High School, secretary; Ms. Bless Velasco of National Library, treasurer; Ms. Vivian Gallardo of Philippine Cultural High School, auditor; Mr. Roderick B. Ramos of Philippine Normal University, PRO; and board of trustees, Ms. Jocelyn Ladlad, DLSU; Ms. Mary Ann Jimenez, DLSU-Dasma; Ms. Estela Montejo, ADMU; Mr. Antonio Resureccion of Xavier School; and ex-officio Ms. Consuelo Estigoy.

Thank you for your support to all our activities under my leadership as president. If someone will call you to be part of the team don’t hesitate to accept the nomination. I know you will enjoy and learn more. Also a sincerest gratitude to our dear fellow professionals who are always willing to attend and support all our activities, and to the faculty, who serve as our inspiration to continue our journey. This is not the end, always expect my full support to the Association, you can always reach me through cell phone or email anytime you need me. Hope to see more of our fellow alumni in our future activities.

Acceptance Speech by Medie De Castro, Incoming President 2005-2006

Mrs. Susima Gonzales, our inducting officer, Dr. Linda M. Tayona, Chairman-PNU LIS Department, Prof. Ruben P. Marasigan, Chief Librarian, Prof. Miguel M. Cobaria and other members of the LIS Dept., colleagues in the profession: Good Morning!

Based on the By-Laws of the Association, if your are elected as the vice-president, automatically, you will be the conference chair for the whole term. That’s why, when I got elected as vice-president, I felt hesitant to accept the position because as you all know being a conference chair is a very difficult task. But with the help and cooperation of my co-officers and members of the Board and ex-officers like Ms. Placida Socorro Limpin and Connie J. Estigoy and with the guidance of our advisers, especially Professors Ruben P. Marasigan and Miguel M. Cobaria, I can say that I successfully passed the challenge and am ready to accept more challenging tasks ahead and to respond to the concerns of our Association.

Our group will continue the plan of activities of the outgoing president. Primarily, the Scholarship Program for deserving LIS students. Hopefully, we can start the program this coming June 2006. With this, we are asking your help through your monetary pledges and tapping other alumni to share their resources so that we could raise funds and continue to support the program.

We are aiming also to conduct not just fora but a series of seminar-workshops in and outside Metro Manila for the professional growth of our members as well as the non-members.

Lastly, I would like to appeal to all the members to actively participate in all the activities of the Association and religiously pay your annual membership dues in order to sustain the financial needs of the Association. Once again, good day and thank you!

New President’s Goals

Our beloved Board for Librarians, Member, Mrs. Elnora Conti, PNU Library Science Professors; Dr. Tayona, Prof. Ruben Marasigan (etc.) and our new Chief Librarian Dr. Mary Orendain, Guests, Past Presidents of PNULISAA, Fellow officers, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen, a pleasant Good morning and welcome to PNULISAA 6th General Assembly and Induction ceremonies.

I am indeed very happy that you are present at this occasion. Being here is already a manifestation of your persisting interest in our Association’s programs and activities.

Let me first narrate how my involvement with our association came about, the first I was appointed as an officer (as secretary) of the Association was in 2002, with Mr. Jing Bautista as our president. Mr. Bautista approached me during the General Assembly and asked me to be the Secretary of the Association, at first, I was reluctant to accept his invitation, thinking that I wouldn’t be able to make it because I knew then that accepting would mean commitment and acceptance of responsibilities and challenges the new board will be facing ….(dahil sa awa ko at nahiya rin ako sa kanila tinanggap ko at sabi ko sige susubukan ko). This is my 5th year in service of the Association, having been re-elected every year since 2002. I must say I have gained enriching experiences and learned to love the Association, the officers and members I worked with, and the library profession as well. Last year you chose me to be the Vice-president, which makes me your president elect for 2006-2007.

Looking at this crowd and realizing the position that I now occupy, I cannot help but feel a bit overwhelmed, nervous and even intimidated by your expectations from me as the president.
Your support and trust will be my motivation to effectively accomplish my duties and to reach the goals we have set. Everyone in this gathering will agree with me that the success of the Board does not depend solely on the President. Our success relies heavily on the cooperation of the executive members and the active support and participation of all the members of the Association; we are all part of this Association. I therefore urge you to participate in the planning and implementation of our projects and share your ideas freely with the current officers.
The Association needs fresh ideas from fresh graduates, so I am also convincing you to join the executive board next year.

In behalf of the 2006 Board, let me present to you my plans and programs for the year 2006-2007.

Membership Campaign

We would like to appeal to our fellow alumni to renew their memberships or become lifetime members.Alumni Directory This year we will compile and publish an Alumni Directory. This is very important tool in reaching out and in disseminating information to all our members.

Seminars/Trainings

We will continue organizing seminars/trainings, one held annually a lecture-workshop on Career talk for PNU Library Science graduating students. (At least 2 seminars for a year). We have a big number of alumni who have made their mark both local and international scene. We will tap their skills and resources or a speaker for this activity and we hope that they will be more than willing to support us in this endeavor.

Scholarship Grants

This is for LS students, the guidelines were set already and hopefully we can implement this by this coming school year. Those who are interested just inquire at the Department or Dr. Tayona’s office.

With these as my guide, and with your confidence, I appeal to all of you to help me achieve these goals. Again, we will not be able to accomplish all these things without your support and total involvement in all our undertakings.

I pray to God Almighty for his blessings and guidance in all our activities. Again, thank you and God bless us all.

Medina de Castro speaks at a general assembly

PNU-LISAA, Inc President Medina de Castro congratulated officers and board members of the Association for having a fruitful year in a general assembly at the PNU conference room last December 9, 2006. Here written is her speech:

Mrs. Nora Conti, Dr. Mary Orendain, Dr. Linda Tayona, Prof. Ruben Marasigan, Prof. Miguel Cobaria and other members of the LIC Dept.; my co-officers, members of the Association; colleagues in the profession, GOOD MORNING!

When I was preparing this report, I read and reviewed content of my acceptance speech last year and I discovered that some plans and activities written in my acceptance speech did not materialize.

Nagawa ba ang mga dapat. And my inner self said, “ OO naman, we tried, performed and did our best!We we were not able to accomplish all but have done the following:

1. We conducted an annual career orientation last February 2006 at the PNU Multimedia Room with Ms. Dolly Decinal as our resource speaker. The career orientation is an annual activity of the association to help LIS students prepare for job hunt.

2. Last August 16, we held a seminar-workshop on “Library Marketing Strategy that Works.” Invited speaker was Mrs. Lleuvelyn Cacha, of Ateneo De Manila University and she shared knowledge on “Library Marketing in the Digital Age”. Our very own Mrs. Zarah Gagatiga, Head Librarian of Xavier School, also spoke on the topic “Creative Use of School Libraries for Pre-School and Basic Education” with focus on storytelling & puppetry for library development. This activity was very successful and well attended perhaps due to very interesting seminar topics.

3. I can say that participation to the National Book Week celebration last Nov. 24-29 is another accomplishment. The PNU-LISAA, Inc. officers, board members, and PNU librarians headed by Dr. Maria Orendain attended the Fellowship Dinner last Nov. 29. The Association was also well-represented even in the Fun Walk activity held last Nov. 24.

4. Scholarship. The Association is ready to adopt PNU LIS scholars on a semestral basis which will begin before the year ends. The new officers and board members shall encourage everyone to support a fund for this very noble mission of the Association.

5. Membership. If you will notice, our theme for this day is “BALIK PNU LIBRARY”. Our aim is to welcome and bring members back again to the PNU-LISAA, Inc. We observed that very few PNU-LISAA members attended the previous activities of the Association. Most of our participants from the previous fora and seminars were non-alumni and mostly from school libraries for which we are, also, very thankful for. We know that we are able to help school librarians in their professional growth and their attendance assist the Association in terms of financial needs. Iilan lang po sa ating mga alumni ang bayad sa inaasahang membership fees para sa PNU-LISAA. So, I am appealing to all the members to pay your annual membership fees to support the incoming activities of the association.

PNU-LISAA: A Team Working For One Goal

Ms. Perla Garcia, our inducting officer, Dr. Linda M. Tayona, PNU LIS Department chairman, colleagues in the profession, good afternoon.

I am having mixed feelings right now. I feel anxious if I can carry out the responsibilities that go with the position of president the Association has entrusted me. But knowing that I belong to a team that really works and is committed to carrying out the Association’s vision, I feel relieved.

My term will continue the vision of the Association to conduct a massive campaign for membership and it will only be done with the help of each one of us. Now we have more than 200 members, but sad to say only a quarter of the members are active, and some are hesitant to commit their time, knowledge, and sometimes their “treasures” for the success of the Association.

We will also continue to conduct relevant for a and seminars with minimal fees and invite competent speakers. We are open to suggestions on topics we should carry on for next year and how we can raise funds for our Association so we can continue to support deserving LIS student through a scholarship grant.

We have all dreamed for this Association to come into being and now that we are on our fourth year, I humbly ask your help to invite your classmates to be a part of our Association, a TEAM that works to achieve ONE goal.

Lastly, thank you for all the support you are giving the Association and we are hoping to see all of you and your other classmates in our forthcoming activities. And I know with the help of all of you present here, our Association, will go a long way. Good day.

PAARL normally holds two national conferences or seminar-workshops a year: the first is during the summer break (April to May), and the second one is during the semestral break - late October. There are normally four forums held every year - one in March, in July during the ABAP Book Fair, in September (Manila International Book Fair), and the last is in November during the National Book Week.
